Pistons Partnership Wrap-Up

Thank you to everyone who participated in Chip Away Malaria's Pistons Ticket initiative! Thank you to those who purchased tickets, those who helped get the word out, and the Detroit Pistons! Without the support and assistance of all of you, this initiative would not have been successful. Once again, thank you! Close to $2,500 was raised from ticket sales and the Pistons-Palace Foundation donated $500 on top of that. From these donations nearly 300 bednets will be purchased and each bednet will protect a family from malaria.

The photo you see is from the April 13th, Pistons vs Bulls game, during halftime. The Pistons recognized Chip Away Malaria by conducting a check presentation. The check consisted of funds raised through the initiative and other funds raised by Chip Away Malaria. The total amount equaled $11,000. We thank the Pistons for providing this opportunity. Chip Away Malaria enjoyed partnering with the Pistons this season. We look forward to developing this idea and relationship with the Pistons even further. Next season, look for the Chip Away Malaria Pistons Ticket Initiative to be even better.

Chip Away Malaria & Detroit Pistons Partnership

Early this year we were very fortunate to forge a partnership with the Detroit Pistons for a fundraising initiative. The Pistons selected 4 games out of their schedule that we would sell tickets for at half off and $10 would go towards the purchase of insecticide treated bednets. We set a goal of selling 250 bednets. After three games we are sitting at 174 tickets sold, which equates to 174 bednets. The last game for the Chip Away Malaria Pistons Ticket Initiative is the Pistons regular season finale on April13th, 2009 at 7:30 pm. Visit www.chipawaymalaria.org to purchase tickets for this game. Tickets are regularly $40 and are being sold at $20 a piece with each ticket purchased saving a life! Help us reach our goal of 250 bednets.

Chip Away Malaria's History

In the 2006 fall semester, Dr. Vincent Mumford challenges his PES 320 Sports Management students to develop a philanthropy that uses sport to raise awareness and donations for malaria. Students were assigned to groups and were to research the diseases of malaria, the best ways to combat the disease, what other charities are doing and methods to raise funds themselves during that semester. After completing the research each group presented to a panel of educators there findings and proposal. Furthermore, each group had to complete a professional business plan on there ideas. Fulfilling the challenge, a core group of students created Chip Away Malaria, becoming the first charity organization by college students for malaria. Chip Away Malaria set goals of increasing awareness around the community through media outlets and events, raise over 5,000 dollars through fund raisers and begin applying for grants. In the fall 2006 semester 5,792 dollars was raised and in the spring 2007 semester 4,052. This past fall the students raised 6,023 dollars. The CMU Honors Program got involved with the fight against malaria and raised over 6,000 dollars themselves. To date Chip Away Malaria has raised close to 22,000 dollars, put on a Free Throw Shooting fundraiser, had a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, Dodgeball tournament, Basketball Clinic, partnered with a national philanthropy named Nothing But nets, registered as an RSO, awarded Michigan Heroes by the Detroit Pistons and American Red Cross, recipients of the Volunteers are Central Award, and received media attention from CMU, CM-Life, The Morning Sun, The Central Beat, CMU Coaches Show, The Detroit News, Detroit Pistons, and Nothing But Nets. Each semester those in Dr. Mumford's PES 320 course will do research and presentations on how they can fulfill the goals of Chip Away Malaria through their fund raising ideas. Chip Away Malaria seeks to get other campuses across the world to start up their own chapter of Chip Away Malaria over the course of the next year. Finally, Chip Away Malaria will continue to inform the people about the problem of malaria in Africa and how one person's donation of just 10 dollars can save a life.
